Casualties in 2017

In 2017, 17 of the 39 casualties recorded in Somaliland were injured in one incident caused by an item of unexploded ordnance in a camp for internally displaced people. All except one of those casualties were women.[3]

The 39 casualties reported in 2017 represented a significant increase on the 13 casualties reported in both 2015 and 2016. This figure disrupted a trend of declining casualties that began in 2007.

The Somaliland Mine Action Center (SMAC) manages casualty data with HALO Trust’s support.[4]

Between 2000 and the end of 2017, the Monitor identified 1,013 casualties in Somaliland (253 killed; 734 injured; 26 unknown).[5]
