Mine Ban Policy

Last updated: 18 December 2019

Policy

The Independent State of Samoa signed the Mine Ban Treaty on 3 December 1997 and ratified it on 23 July 1998, becoming a State Party on 1 March 1999. Samoa believes that existing legislation is sufficient to enforce the antipersonnel mine prohibition domestically.

Samoa has not attended any recent meetings of the treaty. It did not attend the Third Review Conference in Maputo in June 2014. Samoa does not regularly submit updated Article 7 reports, having submitted just one updated report since 2008, in April 2018.

Samoa is not party to the Convention on Conventional Weapons. It is party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Use, production, transfer, and stockpile

Samoa has never used, produced, exported, or imported antipersonnel mines, including for training purposes.
