Support for Mine Action

Support for Mine Action

In 2011, Norway contributed NOK299,018,235 (US$53,375,146) in mine action funding.[1] Over the five-year period 2007–2011, Norway was the world’s second largest donor after the United States.

Norway’s mine action funding is noteworthy for its long list of recipient countries and its support to victim assistance and advocacy. In 2011, Norway supported mine action programs in 29 countries and areas as well as advocacy groups and efforts that support the universalization of the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Munitions. These included programs in victim assistance such as the NOK11,000,000/US$1.96 million contribution to the ICRC for victim assistance.

Norway allocated 70% of its mine action support in 2011 for clearance activities. Norway was again the largest donor to advocacy with contributions totaling some $4 million in 2011, which it provided through NGOs, UNDP, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), and the Mine Ban Treaty Implementation Support Unit (ISU). Despite still being the largest donor for advocacy, its support in 2011 represents an almost 20% reduction in its corresponding support in 2010.
