Support for Mine Action

In 2015, the Kingdom of Norway contributed approximately NOK180 million (US$22 million) in mine action funding to 18 affected states (including 14 States Parties and four states not party), two other areas, and several NGOs and institutions for global activities.[1] This represented the fourth largest contribution in 2015, after the United States (US), Japan, and the European Union.

About 16% of Norway’s total contribution went to NGOs and institutions for global activities. The largest country-specific contribution went to Lao PDR (NOK20.7 million/$2.6 million), with three additional countries—Lebanon, Somalia, and Colombia—each receiving the equivalent of more than $1.5 million.

Norway allocated 79% of its mine action support in 2015 for clearance and risk education activities in 19 affected states and other areas. Norway contributed less than 2% of its support to institutions and NGOs for advocacy activities.

In 2015, Norway contributed NOK7.6 million ($944,213 million) to victim assistance; this represents about 4% of its support.

From 2011–2015, Norway was one of the top five donors each year, and provided more than $215 million in support to mine action activities, with an average annual contribution of $43 million. This is similar to the $208 million recorded during the previous five-year period from 2006–2010.[3]

In February 2016, Norway and the US launched the Global Demining Initiative for Colombia to mobilize additional funding to support demining efforts; as part of this initiative Norway announced a pledge of $22 million for 2017–2019.[5]
